Even though hundreds of spiritualists mediums flourished in the United States and England during the nineteenth century, there were only a very few of these mediums, who were able to command widespread and sometimes awesome respect, fame or furtune because of their breathtaking accomplishments in the seance room.

This is not to suggest that such mediums were also genuine. Far from it! Florence Cook, whose career spanned thirty years, was detected in outright fraud no less than four times, as was Henry Slade.

Even though they may have been charlatans, they were nonetheless master charlatans who created the illusion that they were genuine and that their sitters were in the presence of uncanny, super- natural powers.

What distinguishes these mediums from his or her less impressive peers is impact. These famous mediums of the nineteenth century had unique powers of personality (one might say "magnetism"?) which drew people to them and made them believers once they had arrived.

In the presence of such impact and power, it is not surprising that many sitters simply suspended their critical faculties altogether, so great was the spell!
